The Daytona 500 starts up the NASCAR season this Sunday, and to celebrate I’m hosting a coffee this Friday morning between 7 am and 9 am at Battle Creek’s Idle Hour Grill, 753 NE Capital, in the Verona Neighborhood. Road Commissioners Hugh Coward and Chris Vreeland will be there to talk about county roads and Ott, and I’ll be there to discuss other county issues and this weekend’s race. Come on in for breakfast.

Firekeepers Revenue Sharing

The local Tribe announced this morning at the Local Revenue Sharing Board meeting a payment exceeding $4.68 million to the Board, demonstrating the success to date of the Firekeepers Casino. That Board next divvies up that check between the County and several other “Payment in Lieu of Taxes” local government recipients.

Small Town America

If “it’s the hottest fires that make the hardest steel”, then small southcentral Michigan towns like Athens and Colon will be the best smelted steel someday. But when, and how? I did a windshield appraisal of these places Sunday afternoon, and in an era of globalization these communities – like Homer and Mendon – indeed seem “caught in the middle”. What are your ideas to get these burgs energized again?
